Chrysler's 2010-2014 plan

I just sat through the first half of Chrysler's webcast on their 2010-2014 plan. The following is summary of most of the interesting points that were discussed buy a few of Chrysler's bigwigs.

If I can sum it up right away, if you were hoping for Fiat to inject much needed technology, design and powertrains into Chrysler's otherwise all but dried-up well, you will be happy. It will happen.

The following is a series of snippets and sound bites from this morning's presentation:

Robert Kidder, Chairman of Chrysler Group LLC, admits that Chrysler needs Fiat's technology and product. He ads that Chrysler will work hard to improve their product, grow Mopar and the brand image, along with the help of Fiat.

Perhaps one of the most important statements he made was that business as usual does not apply in Chrysler's new vision.

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler LLC, was instrumental in transforming Fiat into a World leader. He went on to say that his team is working has been working on “fixing” Chrysler for the last few months. He wants it to return to profitability, will reimburse governments and utilize the Fiat plan that obviously worked.

Ralph Gilles was the first leader of Chrysler (head of product design) to speak and he summed up his feelings as being excited and uplifted by Marchionne's vision and energy. He is humbled by the opportunity to make Dodge a great brand once more by splitting Ram and Dodge as previously announced. Ram, although an asset to Dodge, was in fact creating a shadow over every other product, some that deserve more attention.

One of the most important challenges that Chrysler faces is repackaging each vehicle and each brand. One notable point was that new interiors will be created to coincide in harmony with what the customers want.

As for the near future, here's what we can expect from the New Chrysler: All new C segment (new compact) by 2013, an all new B segment (hatchback) and an all new D segment (next Avenger) between now and 2014. All of these will be based on Fiat products.

As for the Viper stories, there will be 500 more and by next summer, no more. However, by the summer of 2012, an all-new Supercar will be introduced, based on a Fiat product.

Doug Betts is the Quality man. He also realizes that Chrysler has much work to do in the quality department, having not been in the running for many years. When he arrived in June of 2009, he realized that there was no strategy here and organization lacked seriously.

Problem-solving was a huge issue. It used to take on average 71 days before anyone would actually address a new issue. Today, 14 teams are assigned specific categories (HVAC, engines, etc) where when problems arise, they are immediately given to team and addressed. Beyond this, Chrysler will work with dealerships to improve initial quality and human interaction between dealer/manufacturer and actual customer.

Chrysler Plans
Nothing would ever entice me to purchase a Chrysler product. If they were the last automobile manufacturer in the world I would rather walk. They harmed my brother big time when they absolutely refused to give him a simple letter acknowledging that the Canadian built 1999 Jeep Grande Cherokee that I gave him (because he was in need of a car and couldn't afford to buy one) was the same as the 1999 Grande Cherokee sold in the US. You see my brother lives in Northern California and I live in Canada and I gave him the car which meant it had to go through customs which required the aforesaid letter. No amount of reasoning would get Chrysler to write a one paragraph letter to allow the car to be imported into the US. They were adamant to treat their former customers like dirt and they did. So the car was reurned to me and I sold it and sent the money to my brother who promptly purchased a GM product. Chrysler can forget this family for potential future clients!

What's next Chrysler?
I have owned a Dynasty and still own a 1999 300M. When it comes to ride, comfort - they are excellent. I have enjoyed the cars - but would I buy one again?Problem number 1: Dealers destroy the willingness to own the brand again. On the Dynasty - I took it in for a 100K service - in perfect condition, came out with a faulty tranny - and was never the same again On the 300, I noticed a wheel shimmy, so I take it in and they just rotate the tires - problem gone. No it showed up again 4K later and this time they blamed the tires. Not warranted by Goodyear because they said the inflation was not consistent. Long story short, the problem turned out to be the mags - they were corroded which required cleaning and sealing. But it cost be a cool 2K. Follow up visits to the dealer were anything but inspiring. I had one case where the battery terminal corroded. They said it was the battery, replaced it under warranty and I got stuck in NJ with a car getting no juice.Turned out that the terminal post was toast - now try servicing the battery - a mega pain.Haven't been impressed with their new models either. I sure hope they do something to their styling and reliability of the tranny.

Re: Chrysler Plans
Come now, Chrysler cannot give you such a letter, because the car for the US and the car for Canada are not built the same. What customs require is the car meets North American Standards which is reflected on a sticker on the door. Unless your car was missing this sticker, which could have resulted from a driver door being replaced or painted over, it should have gone through with ease.I have friends who have taken cars over, and a letter like this was never a requirement. Given that it was California, could have required special emission controls in place which are not found on cars built for other areas. So this could have been a problem - and Chrysler Canada can't give you a letter saying that it meets CA emission standards.I would take Chrysler to task for poor dealerships, poor service not so impressive interiors of late. When they put their mind to it, they make excellent cars. I hope you check what exactly was needed and you will realize that there is a reason why Chrysler Canada could not give you the letter you required.
