Johnson Controls has unveiled the ie:3 at the North American International Auto Show, a 100% electric vehicle offering cabin and battery solutions improving flexibility, liveability and durability for consumers and automakers.

The demo vehicle, the shell of a Kia soul, is equipped with a next-generation, low-profile, lithium-ion battery pack located in a small space under the floor, taking up less space than traditional EV batteries. Not only is it compact, but it allows the vehicle to travel about 160 kilometres.

The cabin features stadium-type seating, where the lower seats can be folded upwards to increase cargo space. The seat cushions are made from recycled fibres and are in turn easily recyclable.

Even the audio system has been carefully though-out. Instead of using traditional loud speakers, the company found a way to insert the speakers in the dash board to free up even more storage space in the doors.

Finally, the concept features a driver information centre that includes a 6.5-inch, “transflective” display offering better visibility in full sunlight as well as a transparent, built-in heads-up display.
