General Motors has just lifted the veil on the Chevrolet Sonic, the North American replacement of the Aveo, at the Detroit Auto Show. Fresher and more contemporary, the entry-level model promises improved performance, handling and fuel efficiency.
Available as a four-door sedan or hatchback, the Sonic can by powered by the Chevrolet Cruze's 1.4-litre, turbocharged mill generating 138 hp and 148 ft-lb of torque. The base engine will be a 1.8-litre Ecotec producing 135 hp and 123 ft-lb of torque mated to a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic gearbox.
The Sonic comes with electronic power steering, stability control with rollover sensing, ten air bags, electronic brake force distribution and OnStar.
Buyers will also have the opportunity to equip their sub-compact model with a remote starter, heated front seats and a sunroof, and will have a choice of several wheel sizes, including 17-inch wheels wrapped in sport tires.
On the technology front, the Sonic will feature XM satellite radio, USB ports and Bluetooth, encouraging the use of the MyChevrolet smart phone app.
Production of the Sonic will begin later in 2011 in Michigan, but the automaker has yet to announce the official launch date.
