Under the guidance of Professor Gaétan Laroche, researchers at the Université Laval in Quebec have developed a technology that will put an end to one of our automotive banes: fog.

Polyvinyl alcohol is applied in a plasma treatment similar to that used to create the polymer bodies of the now-defunct Saturns, and the effects of the anti-fog coating are permanent.

Already, eyeglass manufacturers have shown interest in the coating, an alternative to the use of sprays that need to be reapplied often.

Professor Laroche explained to Auto123.com that the techniques eyeglass makers use to create scratch-proof lenses can easily be combined with the fog proofing process, and we could see this happening in the near future.

He also confirmed that they’re “considering other applications for the invention, including automobiles,” but the project is still embryonic at this stage and hasn’t yet been tested in a vehicle. Some distributors have apparently contacted him, however.

Does this mean the days of heavy petting in the back seat, secure in the knowledge that our foggy windows hide us from prying eyes, are over? Only time will tell.
