Nissan can safely say that 2010 was an all-around great year. The automaker managed to beat Honda at the sales game, becoming Japan’s second biggest car manufacturer and one of the top five worldwide with 4.08 million units sold.

The emerging Chinese market is mainly responsible for Nissan’s success, where sales spiked by 36% to hit the 1.02-million mark. This market alone represents 25% of Nissan’s global sales, confirming its already major role on the worldwide automotive scene.

Globally, the Japanese manufacturer’s sales have increased by 22% compared to 5% for Honda, explaining Nissan’s spectacular comeback last year.

If you factor in Renault’s results (Nissan’s partner), the alliance could well overtake Volkswagen, the third biggest automaker in the industry. Toyota is still number one with 8.42 million vehicles sold, followed very closely by GM.
