GM is citing a more 'refined focus' on their core products as the reason for temporarily reassigning their High Performance Vehicle Operations (HPVO) team.

The team is made up of about 60 engineers based out of GM's Warren Tech Centre. Vehicles under the HPVO umbrella included the V-Series Cadillacs, and the SS variants of both the Chevrolet Cobalt and Chevrolet HHR.

According to sources, there will be no effects on models already in production or planned for production. Camaro SS and Cadillac CTS-V fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

The HPVO engineers are being moved into higher-volume projects to help improve fuel efficiency and develop advanced propulsion systems as the automaker moves forward with efforts to mass-market direct injection engines and other initiatives.

GM officials say that they don't plan to let the talent of their specialized team go to waste, and that the HPVO team will reunite when market conditions warrant it.

A GM press release says that the talented engineers will add expertise to the teams they join.
