Bonhams, Britain’s oldest auction house, held its most successful auction of Aston Martin motor cars and related automobilia this past week-end at Newport Pagnell, home of the brand. Organized for the Aston Martin Works Service, this one-brand auction generated a record of 7.3 million Canadian dollars (£4.7 million) with bids taken from enthusiasts from around the world including Hong Kong, Czech Republic, Poland, Argentina, Australia and the United States.

The highest selling bid went to “VMF 65”: the ex-Works 1950 Aston Martin DB2 Team Car. This British Racing Green gem, raced by such legendary and leading drivers as Stirling Moss, Peter Collins, Roy Salvadori, Tony Rolt, Lance Macklin, George Abecassis and Eric Thompson was purchased by a collector for close to $800,000 CAN (£513,000). It’s pre-sale estimate was between $575,000 and $675,000 CAN!

Another star of the event was a 1959 4.7-litre Aston Martin DB4 Works Prototype, also known as Design Project DP2155. This unique car was developed by former Aston Martin Chairman Victor Gauntlett and the Director of Works Service and Parts Operations Kingsley Riding-Felce. It sold for a little over $750,000 CAN (£485,500) to a European collector.

Lot 308 was also highly sought after. Nine telephone bidders, five absentee bidders and five bidders in the room fought over this 1968 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage “Barn Find”. Finally it sold for close to $200,000 CAN (£124,700).

A test mule from the James Bond film “Goldfinger” also gained considerable interest among buyers. This 1962 Aston Martin DB4 Series IV Vantage sold for close to $130,000 CAN (£84,000).

Total sales for this auction amounted to close to $7.3 million dollars CAN (£4.7 million) with 95% of all lots being sold.

This auction was the 11th one organized by Bonhams for the Aston Martin Works Service, a factory-owned specialist with the experience and culture to care for post-war Aston Martin and Lagonda cars. Customers from all over the world deal with this company to obtain ground up restorations or personalization services.
