BMW will become the first premium automaker to deploy a fleet of some 500 all electric vehicles for private use in day to day driving. The automaker's "MINI E" is an electric powered MINI, which employs a 150 kilowatt, or 204 horsepower electric motor which drives the front wheels.

The electric drive system operates entirely without emissions and minimal noise- with power stored in a lithium ion battery enabling a range of over 240 kilometres. With the electric system providing plenty of torque, drivers can expect 0-60 to come up in just 8.5 seconds and an electronically limited 95 mile per hour top speed. MINI engineers have tweaked the MINI E's suspension to match the cars weight distribution, ensuring the car delivers the handling dynamics the brand is known for.

Initially, the MINI E will be driven by 500 selected individuals for the purpose of gathering real-world information on driving characteristics. The model will only be offered as a two-seater initially, and the possibility of production is being explored for Europe.

The MINI E will give its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19 and 20, 2008.
