The new compact SUV about to grace Mitsubishi showrooms in Canada will be called ‘RVR’ instead of ‘Outlander Sport’ like in the United States, according to a press release from Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada.

Newly baptized
After making its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show this past March, the vehicle first appeared on North American soil at the New York International Auto Show a month later. However, it didn’t even have a name yet!

Unlike Mitsubishi Motors USA, the brand’s Canadian executives finally chose to call it ‘RVR’, which happens to be the same name as in Asian markets, in order to avoid confusion with the existing Outlander. The former is a 5-passenger SUV, while the latter can sit up to 7.

The new Mitsubishi RVR will be powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder MIVEC-2 engine mated to a standard 5-speed manual transmission or, optionally, a CVT featuring a 6-speed manumatic mode. Meanwhile, the Outlander relies on a 2.4-litre engine and CVT as standard equipment.

All in the name...
RVR actually stands for "Recreational Vehicle Runner" and refers to the vehicle’s fun and outdoorsy nature. In Europe, the same model is known as ASX or "Active Sports Crossover," much like the 2001 concept unveiled in Detroit, that was among the first to coin the term "crossover."

The Mitsubishi RVR will arrive at Canadian dealers in mid-October.
