Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar's new global brand director, admitted that the company is considering a small sports car that could also be offered as a sedan. Slotted below the XF, it would directly rival the BMW 3-Series.
"We need different models. We need lower priced models," he said. "We need to play in that world. Jaguar needs a small sports car for image and a sedan for volume.''
This statement evokes Jaguar's unsuccessful attempt to challenge BMW with the X-Type, which proved to be a big disappointment in terms of sales. Launched in 2002, it stopped being produced for Canada in 2008.
Hallmark obviously doesn't need to be reminded of that mistake. "If we go into the smaller car market, we want to build elegant cars with great technology that give a sense of occasion and position us above that competition – where Jaguar should be," he added.
