The six finalists for the prestigious North American Car and Truck of the Year award were announced today before the Detroit Economic Club. A group of 50 journalists from across Canada and the U.S. voted among 14 cars and 11 trucks, which had to be new-generation or feature substantial modifications. Three finalists were named in each of the two categories.
The journalists have to consider several criteria, such as innovation, style, safety, handling, driving enjoyment and value. This year is marked by two breakthroughs: for the first time, diesel-powered vehicles as well as a Korean car have made it into the top three.
The finalists in the North American Car of the Year category are the Ford Flex, the Hyundai Genesis and the Volkswagen Jetta TDI.
The finalists in the North American Truck of the Year category are the Dodge Ram, the Ford F-150 and the Mercedes-Benz ML320 BlueTEC.
Last year, the Chevrolet Malibu and the Mazda CX-9 took home the honours. This year, the winner of each category will be announced at a press conference on January 11 at the Detroit International Auto Show.
