Following the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan, a nuclear crisis is intensifying with each passing hour. Several reactors, including the one in Fukushima, have been severely damaged and now emit abnormally-high levels of radiation, which has the rest of the planet fearing the worst.

Facing a potential disaster, Volkswagen repatriated 30 of its 40 German sales representatives working in Japan. Meanwhile, BMW also offered its employees to leave the country. So far, 50 of them have come back to Germany.

The assembly plants of most car makers remain shut down. Honda, Mazda and Suzuki are focusing on a return to action early next week.

Nissan expects to re-open its Kyushu plant on Thursday and as long as stocks meet demand, while some Toyota operations will kick back into gear starting next Monday.

Mitsubishi is the only Japanese automaker that resumed production.
