The trial period of the pilot photo radar and red-light surveillance project begins today in the province of Québec. This three-month period will be followed by an 18 month long pilot project.

As of today, motorists travelling in the Montréal, Montérégie and Chaudière-Appalaches regions will notice the appearance of special signs on the roadside. They indicate one of the 15 sites hosting photo radars or red-light surveillance cameras.

The Minister of Transport of Québec and Minister responsible for the Mauricie region, Ms. Julie Boulet, reiterated in a press release that the project aims to improve the road accident toll and save lives. To ensure complete openness, the Minister is simultaneously launching a large-scale information campaign designed to inform the population and, more specifically, the communities living in the regions where these remote sensing devices are installed.

Handling offenders

During the trial period stretching from May 19 to August 18, 2009, offenders will receive warning letters. However, from August 19, 2009, and 18 months thereafter offenders will receive fines. The revenue generated by the fines issued during this period will be invested in the Road Safety Fund. Take note that no demerit points will be entered into an offender’s file during the trial period and the pilot project.
