Volkswagen brought out the big guns yesterday, giving a glimpse of the silhouette of the all-new 2012 Beetle on the Oprah Winfrey Show and offering each of the 275 members of the audience the keys to their very own 2012 model.
The German manufacturer took advantage of the fact that Oprah herself drives a New Beetle to orchestrate this massive publicity stunt and show the general public that the new Beetle has evolved and now promises a sportier drive. The car has been redesigned from scratch by the same team behind the Golf GTI and Passat CC.
Jonathan Browning, CEO of Volkswagen North America, said that “Oprah Winfrey and the Volkswagen Beetle are two American icons, so when the Oprah show approached us with this incredible opportunity to share her Beetle experience with deserving viewers, we instantly wanted to be a part of it”.
The glimpsed lines indeed evoke more aggressive and sporty styling for the Beetle, reminiscent of the Ragster concept. Volkswagen says its car will be customizable with a variety of styles, accessories and options. The Beetle will feature 19-inch wheels, sport seats, a touch-screen stereo, brand-name speakers, navigation, Bluetooth and better ambient lighting.
The veil will officially be lifted on the Beetle in the spring of 2011 and it will hit American dealerships in the fall.
