In light of the current economic situation in the United States and the free fall of its sales numbers, General Motors has announced the end of an important era of its history. The current incarnations of the GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban full-size SUVs will not see a next generation. GM is tolling the Suburban's bell after a 76-year run, with production ending in 2011. The Suburban was named after a military derivative of the mid-1930s.

Cadilac Escalade

The Cadillac Escalade will see its size considerably reduced in order to incorporate it into the same Lambda platform as the next-generation Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia. As for the full-size GMC and Chevrolet SUVs, no future design is planned.

We can't help but think about the Chrysler Group's announcement last week that the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen have reached the end of the line. In light of the discussions between GM and Cerberus LLC's Chrysler Group over a possible merger, this latest announcement means that no large SUV will feature in the new giant's catalogue after 2011.
