Hyundai continues on its momentum gained in 2010 and began the new year with a bang. The manufacturer has managed to sell 2,643 of its Elantra, including 1,305 2011 models, 948 units dating from 2010 and 390 Touring versions in January.

The total sale figures of the South Korean company, shows that the car is accountable for about one third of the 6,684 vehicles that have been sold in Canada last month.

These results surprised many observers of the automotive world, as the Civic and Mazda3 have dominated sales for a very long time in the compact car market. Steve Kelleher, president and CEO of Hyundai Canada is just as surprised and admits that the “Elantra has climbed to the top of sales despite the weak advertising support it received in the last month”.

The manufacturer also plans to deploy a sustained advertising effort this weekend at the Super Bowl, where it will be the exclusive automotive sponsor of the first quarter. Four new ads featuring the Elantra will be unveiled at that time. People wishing to have a look at them in advance may do so before the football event of the year by visiting the manufacturer's Facebook page.

The popularity of the Elantra is also undeniable in the United States and could even force Hyundai to import it directly from Korea, if the plant located in Alabama in charge of production for the U.S. market would become overloaded by strong demand.

The Toyota Corolla was the second best-selling vehicle in January 2011 with 2,146 units, while the Honda Civic ranks third with 1,142 sales.
