The Intelligent Key: Open Sesame!

It's a relatively simple saying that's been around throughout history in stories, songs and movies. Now, the concept behind it is available at your local car dealership in the form of the latest 'Intelligent Key' systems.

Years ago, remote keyless access negated the need to use ones key for locking and unlocking. It made things easier-- so it wasn't long before remote access became something of a standard feature. Now, the 'intelligent key' system is becoming popular, and it may one day replace the remote in the same way.

A simple press on a button like this can lock or unlock your door, while the key remains safely in your pocket or purse.

An intelligent key allows drivers to lock or unlock their vehicle without actually handling the key or remote. A simple touch on the door handle works the locks, assuming the driver has the key-fob in their pocket, purse or briefcase.

It's all powered by close-distance communication between the vehicle and its key via radio waves. In close proximity, the key and car recognize and approve one another. Once this happens, things unlock the moment the driver touches the handle or a small button thereon.

Once on board, it's much the same story for starting the engine and driving off. Rather than inserting the key into the ignition, a simple button press is all that's needed to fire things up. Press the button again to turn the car off.

With no need to handle the key itself, life is made simple in a number of situations. For instance, fumbling for the remote while carrying an armful of shopping becomes a thing of the past. No need to dig through the pockets of your winter coat for the remote while it's cold outside, either.

Of course, most owners also get a smug sensation when unlocking their ride with a simple touch. The above are just a few examples.

Intelligent Key systems are sold under various names depending on the automaker, though all generally come with a slick-looking key-fob that houses a built in transceiver. The key-fob usually has standard push-button controls for the locks, trunk and alarm-- though no traditional key is visible. Throw the transceiver key down on the table during coffee or lunch with friends for a great conversation starter.

Once the intelligent key is within the vehicles interior, a simple button press fires up the engine.

2009 BMW 135i Coupé Review
I have no trouble imagining one of these elegant little coupes slumbering in the garage of a sumptuous home in a trendy urban quarter. This little gem would probably rub shoulders with a Series 5 or 7 sedan and, in parts of Canada where the winters really have bite, an X3 as well!
