Well known for the safety of its automotive vehicles, Swedish manufacturer Volvo will conduct a study to compile a variety of data on driving behaviour in specific situations. For the FOT research project, part of the EuroFOT project established by the SAFER research center, the automaker will equip some 100 Volvo V70s and XC70s with cameras and computers.

The monitoring equipment will enable them to see how a driver can avoid an accident in heavy traffic and will register the driver's head and eye movement. Also, the vehicles' safety equipment will store useful data that Volvo can compare with the data collected by the computers and cameras.

Other cameras will show what the driver sees on the road, in front and in back. All this information will be saved on a hard disk to allow researchers to analyze and interpret it. The three-month project will allow the Swedish manufacturer to build safer products and the 28 partners involved in the EuroFOT project to find solutions to the various traffic problems in Europe.
