Volvo's anticipated S60 concept took the stage at the Detroit Auto Show today, giving those in attendance a glimpse at the possible future styling direction of the Swedish brand's sedan.

The concept demonstrated a daring and sleek silhouette that displays a new level of energy and excitement not yet seen in Volvo's styling. The concept used a tapered 'double-wave' beltline that ran the length of the car from the headlight to taillight, rising slightly to accommodate the large turbine-shaped wheels and fenders surrounding them.

The entire package looks wind-swept, and doors appear to be hinged at the outsides- opening from the middle. It's a coupe-inspired machine that's backed by a promise to deliver a sporty driving experience like no Volvo yet.

"We both can and dare to deliver even more exciting and more dynamic designs while retaining our grip on the lead position with regard to safety. The concept car shows part of our future, it's a hint that the all-new S60 will be one of the strongest contenders in the CD premium segment," says Stephen Odell, President and CEO at Volvo Cars.

The S60 Concept also featured a floating crystal centre console that was built with a famous Swedish Glassworks. Though crystal is unlikely to find its way into the production model, the floating centre console could be another hint at an element we'll see in the production car in 2010.
