Chevrolet’s iconic sports car, the Corvette, will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a visit to the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer, where Chevrolet is making its third consecutive appearance.
The Harley Earl-designed veteran was born as the EX-122 concept in 1952, in answer to rising demand for an American-made sports car to rival imports like Jaguar and MG. It actually debuted in 1953 at the GM Motorama at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.
The Corvette was the first mass-produced sports car, and one of the first cars, to have a production fibreglass body, which allowed designers to create moulded curves, shave extra weight, and prevent corrosion, a common problem at the time.
The car’s legendary V8 made its first appearance in 1955. In 1981, production moved from Missouri to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where it still comes from the same production line. More than 1.3 million Corvettes have hit the streets over six generations.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place at Goodwood House in West Sussex, England, from June 28 to July 1, 2012.
