Vincent Besson, Products and Markets Manager at Peugeot-Citroën, confirmed that the French automaker is currently working to resurrect the 2CV, a true automotive icon in the same league as the Ford Model T.

The fight against CO2 emissions and the fact that consumers now want more affordable cars led Peugeot-Citroën to explore new grounds and build an environmentally-friendly global car with a hybrid variant that's just as cheap to buy as a diesel-powered equivalent.

In 2007, the company launched the C-Cactus Concept and hinted at a larger and updated 2CV for 2010-2011. However, various studies and analyses considerably slowed the project to the point of killing it.

Now, the conditions appear to be ripe for a second try. So far, we know that the future compact sedan will stand about 4.2 metres long.

The Citroën 2CV is one of the most revered automobiles of all time. Designed during World War II, it was manufactured from 1948 to 1990 when production reached 3,868,634 units. Featuring a flat two-cylinder engine, the 2CV topped at 60 km/h, could sit four and haul an extra 50 kilos. While styling proved controversial, interior room earned unanimous praise.
