GM's small pickup trucks are heading into 2009 with a slew of new or updated features. Most notable among them is the availability of the automaker's 5.3 liter V8 engine, which delivers 300 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The new V8 option is available on extended cab and crew cab models.

With the smallblock V8 on board, Colorado and Canyon owners can tow up to 6,000 lbs with confidence and expect 0-60 in under 7 seconds.

Though the 2.9 liter dual-cam four-cylinder and unique 3.7 liter five-cylinder engines are still available, the V8 is likely to be a popular choice for hard-working truck owners and performance buffs alike. After all, the only thing better than a V8 in a big truck is a V8 in a small one.

Additionally, the Colorado and Canyon will now ride an improved brake system and offer standard stability control across the model range. The Z71 off-road package features a higher stance and a larger wheel and tire combination this year, and a new family of wheels and two new colors round out the truck's visual offerings.

The 2009 Canyon and Colorado lineup includes regular cab, extended cab and crew cab body styles, two pickup bed lengths and three available suspensions.
