DaimlerChrysler News :

Quite the head-turner, the Dodge Magnum is without a doubt one of the major attractions in the DaimlerChrysler booth. Available in 3 different versions and as all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, the Magnum wants to be the most colorful car of the moment. From the diminutive 2.7L V6 to the monstrous 340-hp 5.7L Hemi V8, everyone will find something to their liking.

Along the same lines, DaimlerChrysler has launched their fabulous Chrysler 300, that replaces both the 300M and the Concorde. Completely identical mechanically and structurally to the Magnum, it distinguishes itself by more elegant lines and by a heftier list of standard features.

In the pickup category, Dodge took the wraps off its 3rd generation Dakota, which wiil actually become the base of Mitsubishi's forthcoming truck, the Raider. Offered in either Club or Crew Cab, the cabin is more comfortable, modern and more refined. The engines have not changed as both the 3.7L V6 and the 4.7L V8 that develops 230 hp. The other pickup that should be mentioned is, of course, the Ram SRT-10. It is now possible to get it in Quad Cab configuration and with a 5-speed automatic.

On the Jeep front, the Grand Cherokee gets a serious face lift for the 3rd time. Introduced a few months ago, we can already see them on our roads. Having chosen to finally abandon the old inline 6-cylinder, DaimlerChrysler engineers gave it the Liberty's 3.7L V6 that develops 210 hp. It is also available with the 4.7L V8 and with the 5.7L Hemi V8 in Limited trim.

DaimlerChrysler is consciencious about the fact that the small car segment is very important in Canada and especially in Quebec. The bigwigs at DaimlerChrysler decided that, for 2005, they would offer substancial rebates on the PT Cruiser and SX 2.0. The PT Cruiser's base price was of $21,170 and it is now reduced to $15,998. Same thing for the SX 2.0 that will be sold for the same price as an Echo H/B, in other words, for $12,998. With this new approach, DaimlerChrysler is trying to bring back customers that are looking for a compact car into their showrooms.

As far as concepts are concerned, DaimlerChrysler presented the Jeep Treo that could be described as a mini urban utility vehicle. Equipped with a Hydrogen Fuel Cell that powers all four wheels through two electric motors, the Treo is designed to adapt to all conditions. What is notable about the Treo is that is has a 2 + 1 seating configuration and its surprising payload capacity considering its small outer dimensions. Secondly, we find the Dodge Dude, which is in fact a modified Dodge Durango that has been transformed into a pickup by Ralph Gilles, the designer of the Chrysler 300. Originally introduced at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, it is a styling exercise for Mopar after-market parts.
