Toyota has announced details for the 2019 edition of its Toyota 86 sports coupe. Our attention is immediately focused on the limited-production Special Edition TRD version, which offers more dynamic performances and a look to match.
Buyers can choose their Toyota 6 with either of two transmission choices. The 6-speed manual helps the engine deliver 205 hp and maximum torque of 156 lb-ft, and the driver benefits from more precise shifts thanks to the short gear lever. With the automatic transmission, output and maximum torque are 200 hp and 151 lb-ft. This gearbox allows for aggressive up- and down-shifting thanks to paddles shifters mounted on the steering wheel.
The 86’s Boxer engine with horizontally-opposed cylinders is compact and flat, set further back in the chassis to enable a lower, more aggressive front hood. The vehicle’s low stance is enhanced by a powerful front end featuring sharp lines, a wide grille and angular LED headlights. The roofline contributes to its low, sleek profile and aggressive curbside manner.
The body itself is built from rigid yet lightweight components (aluminum hood, resin fuel tank), all with the goal of reducing the total vehicle weight.
The 2019 Toyota 86 also comes with a number of state-of-the-art safety technologies, including the Toyota Star Safety System, six airbags, LED headlamps featuring the automatic headlamp system plus a high-mount LED stop lamp, a tire pressure monitoring system and back-up camera.
The 2019 catalogue for the 86 includes three trims, including the base model and the GT; each of these comes with either of the two available transmissions. And of course there’s the new Special Edition TRD.
The base model
The entry-level 86 includes 17-inch alloy wheels and driver-focused instrumentation including a multi-information display and digital/analogue speedometer, as well as an 8-speaker, 7-inch display audio system with USB input, Bluetooth connectivity and steering wheel-mounted controls. Toyota is also including a range of comfort and convenience amenities including auto air conditioning, variable intermittent wipers and dual power-adjustable and heated mirrors.
The GT
This version gets dual zone automatic air conditioning, seats enhanced with suede-like inserts and leather side bolstering, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, the Smart Key System with Push Button Start, an anti-theft system, rear spoiler and LED fog lamps.
The Special Edition TRD
Produced in very limited quantities (only 50 units are being made available for Canada), the TRD adds to the GT manual-transmission version and gets Brembo brakes, SACHS Dampers, a TRD performance dual exhaust and aero kit, plus unique 18” alloy wheels clad in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. It will also sport several unique styling elements, such as a red-stitched interior with red seat belts plus TRD interior trim and badges, and an exclusive “Raven” black body colour.
