Ford surprised everyone at the NAIAS by announcing that the C-MAX Energi and Hybrid will hit the North American market in 2012, bringing consumers more choice for high-mileage vehicles.

Both models leverage Ford's advanced lithium-ion battery systems. The Hybrid operates like most conventional gasoline-electric vehicles on the road, while the Energi offers plug-in capability to maximize the use of the electric motor and limit emissions. It also promises more than 500 miles (800 kilometres) of overall driving range and a full overnight charge through a 120-volt outlet.

The C-MAX Hybrid is targeted to deliver better miles per gallon than the Ford Fusion Hybrid, the most fuel-efficient midsize sedan in North America.

''C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid will be perfect for families looking to maximize their hybrid car experience,'' said Nancy Gioia, Ford director of Global Electrification. ''Thanks to the versatile interior, these cars are going to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers who need room to grow.''

Inside, the Energi variant will feature MyView, a new technology allowing drivers to access even more vehicle data such as the electrical demands of vehicle accessories, including air conditioning, which influences fuel economy and the electric driving range. Additionally, the Brake Coach feature will help educate drivers to optimize their use of the regenerative brakes.

Another interesting gadget is MyFord Mobile, which enables access to a secure Ford website and smartphone/feature phone app to connect with SYNC, get instant vehicle status information, perform key functions remotely, monitor the car's state of charge and current range, and get various alerts.

Built on the automaker's global C-car platform, the all-new Ford C-MAX offers standard seating for five with a small, two-passenger third-row bench as an option. Handy features like automatic liftgate opening, parking assist and keyless entry are also available.

Both the C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid models will be built alongside the all-new 2012 Ford Focus and Focus Electric at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne.
