GM has recently announced that it will offer a state-of-the-art Duramax turbo diesel motor for some of its light-duty trucks, as early as 2009 for certain vehicles including the post-2009 Hummer H2.
This 4.5L V8 has significantly improved engine fuel efficiency, up to 25 %, reduces CO2 emissions by 13% and cuts particulates and NOx emissions by a minimum of 90%. The new DOHC 32-valve diesel engine fits within the same space of a small-block V-8 gas engine. Horsepower and torque ratings are expected to be in excess of 310 and 520 lb-ft respectively.
Perhaps the most impressive feat of the 4.5L diesel is that fact that it will meet the tough emissions standards set for 2010. It will also be compliant with all 50 state regulations effectively making it one of the cleanest diesel vehicles ever produced.
The Duramax diesel 6.6L V-8 has been produced in the U.S. since the 2001 model year and over 1 million have been sold.
