History/Description: The Dodge Dakota was built to compete with the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger and Nissan Frontier with a focus on aggressive styling and performance. With the only V8 engine in its segment, Dakota could be had in various body, powertrain and drivetrain configurations. Dodge is canning this machine after the 2011 model year to focus on other products. But it had a pretty good run.
Look for A 3.7L V6 or a 4.7L V8 engine, 2- or 4-wheel drive and automatic or manual transmission availability, depending on the model in question. Air conditioning, remote access, cruise control, an outside temperature display and power heated leather seats were available, too.
Shoppers after a fully loaded model should shop a Dakota SLT. The Dakota SXT was the mid-range, high-value model where feature content was concerned.
What Owners Like: Performance, ride quality, a solid driving feel, capability and cabin spaciousness are typically highly rated by Dakota owners. Particularly, models with the V8 engine are said to be plenty powerful and responsive in all situations.
What Owners Dislike: Dislikes seem limited to a ‘cheap’ feel to the Dakota’s cabin on some models, as well as excessive fuel consumption from the V8 engine.
Common Issues With A Used Dodge Dakota: Standard used pickup truck checks apply to any used Dakota you may be considering. As a bare minimum, a Dodge/Ram trained mechanic should check the underside of your potential used truck for signs of excessive rust, dents or holes, leaking differentials, transfer case leaks, and oil or coolant leaks from the engine.
Have the front suspension checked fully as well. Some owners have reported potential durability issues in regards to ball joints and tie-rod ends.
