German driver Mike Rockenfeller (Audi) set the fastest time in the first free practice session in Hockenheim for the opening round of the DTM in Hockenheim.
The young German driver, who graduated to the works Audi Abt team this year, set a fastest lap of 1m35.085. He leads his team mates Timo Scheider (1m35.529) and Mattias Ekström (1m35.697).
The fastest Mercedes is surprisingly the 2008-spec C-Class driven by rookie driver Christian Vietoris. The first works HWA Mercedes is the C-Class driven by Ralf Schumacher in 6th place, just behind rookie Edoardo Mortara in his Audi.
Bruno Spengler took 7th position with a best lap of 1m35.804. The Canadian driver, who appeared on top of the time sheet at the end of the session, eventually dropped down the order when most rivals went out again to set a quick lap.
A storm hit the Hockenheim circuit moments before the starts of the session, which forced the organizers to red flag it for several minutes. Then, in drying conditions, the last cars that took to the track last where obviously the fastest.
