Paul Di Resta (Mercedes) clinched the pole position after a chaotic qualifying session in Shanghai, site of the last round of the 2010 season. Championship leader Bruno Spengler (Mercedes) hit the wall and will start from 17th position on the grid.
As expected, the Shanghai circuit was very tricky, and a lot of drivers put themselves in trouble during the qualifying session. Bruno Spengler, who leads the provisional standing by 3-points coming in this last race of the season, hit the concrete wall in the first part of Q1 while he was standing in 5th position.
The Canadian driver went into the pits to have his car fixed during Q2. The session was again stopped after Darryl O’Young's (Audi) accident. Considering the time delays, the organizers decided to keep all the cars remaining for Q3.
Spengler was able to leave the pits for a flying lap, but Timo Scheider (Audi) destroyed his car in the wall, bringning yet another red flag. The session was put to an end with Q4 cancelled, resulting with a 17th spot on the grid for Spengler, alongside Darryl O’Young.
Paul Di Resta (Mercedes) and Gary Paffett (Mercedes) took 1st and 2nd on the grid ahead of Jamie Green (Mercedes) and Timo Scheider. Bruno Spengler’s situation is quite difficult, but his rivals still have to finish the race and score points, which could be difficult on this track.
