Mentioning a drum brings up another attractive aspect of the Duramax -- it's quieter than a traditional diesel engine, and that is a very welcome thing. Not only is a diesel engine noise, well, noisy, it's not a good noise. It sounds like an engine that is not happy, that is getting ready to spew its expensive bits all over your driveway. There is still some of this in the Duramax but it's less than its competitors, and that should attract people.

Davis says the Duramax diesel engine will provide best-in-class noise/vibration/harshness characteristics, ''virtually eliminating the noise, shake and roughness often associated with diesel powerplants."

Much of the credit here goes to the Allison 1000 Series transmission, which is a fully automatic, electronic 5-speed with overdrive and a park pawl, and it offers planetary helical gearing similar to that used in the company's World Transmission.

The 1000 Series is meant for general use in trucks of up to 19,850 lbs.gross vehicle weight (GVW) and 26,000 lbs. gross combination weight (GCW).
