Toyobaru.net disclosed new information about the Toyota FT-86 following a recent executive meeting in Japan. The car will reportedly be called FT-S and sold under the Scion brand name after making an appearance at the 2011 New York International Auto Show.
Under the hood will be a naturally-aspirated, 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine. Pricing is rumoured to hover around $20,000. In addition to a front-wheel drive model, the car would be available as a Subaru with all-wheel drive.
Production will likely start in the fourth quarter of 2011 – or sooner if the iQ (scheduled to launch in May) fails to meet expectations.
The manufacturer reportedly plans to use drifting legend Tanner Foust to help promote the car, which is inspired from the rear-wheel drive Toyota Corolla AE86. The latter continues to be a star on the track even though production ended in 1987.
Toyota will showcase the FT-86 II Concept at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show (March 3-13, 2011).
