The European Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee has just voted in favour of a law forcing all new cars sold in the European Union from March 2018 to be equipped with eCall technology to contact emergency services in the case of an accident.

GM's OnStar service already offers this type of assistance in Canada and the U.S., and its Opel/Vauxhall division will start doing the same in 13 European markets (including France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the U.K.) as of August 2015.

Separate rules entered into force in June 2014, requiring EU members to ensure they have the infrastructure required to handle eCalls by October 2017.
