In the light of recent events in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Bahrain International Circuit has today Monday issued a statement regarding the Gulf Air Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix.

Bahrain Grand Prix organisers have announced they have decided to withdraw the race as the opening event of the 2011 F1 season, after days of uncertainty following the unrest in the country.

The decision was finally confirmed by the track organisers on Monday afternoon. The Crown Prince informed Bernie Ecclestone of the decision by telephone earlier today.

"We felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest," Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa said.

"Bahrain's priority is on overcoming tragedy, healing divisions and rediscovering the fabric that draws this country together to remind the world of the very best that Bahrain is capable of as a nation once again united."

It is yet unclear if the Bahrain race will be postponed to a later date or not.

The next test session will be held March 8-11 in Barcelona before the season's opener in Australia, March 27.
