The Red Bull Racing and Ferrari Formula 1 teams are getting ready for what will be a very intense battle this weekend during the Grand Prix of Germany at the Nürburgring.
Fernando Alonso of the Scuderia Ferrari, recent winner of the British Grand Prix topped the times in the opening practice session this morning.
The two-time World Champion was the only man to lap the Nurburgring circuit in the 1m31s.
Alonso finished ahead of Red Bull-Renault duo Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, who were over three tenths slower than the Ferrari driver.
Alonso’ teammate Felipe Massa was fourth ahead of the McLaren-Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.
In the afternoon, Webber emerged quickest of all with a time of 1:31.711, one tenth of a second faster than Alonso this morning.
Massa was quickest for a long part of the session before he was beaten by Alonso. Then Webber set a fast lap to beat the Ferraris.
Vettel and Massa finished their day of work in third and fourth place, respectively. Then came the two Mercedes W02 of Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg.
