The morning session was characterised by changeable weather, as the session began on a wet track which became worse as it rained intermittently before a late improvement.

Michael Schumacher was second fastest for Mercedes, 0.660s behind Webber, with Rubens Barrichello pushing up to third after a late run for Williams.

Mexican Sergio Perez likewise improved late to 1m47.422s, which was a boost for team Sauber after the tricky conditions had earlier caught out team-mate Kamui Kobayashi, who crashed his C30 heavily on the exit to Club when he ran over the kerbs.

The weather sadly remained changeable during the afternoon session.

The session was very quiet as very few cars ventured out on the slippery race track. But action raged in the final moments as Schumacher, Adrian Sutil, Nico Rosberg and Felipe Massa traded first place.

Massa set the best lap for Ferrari in 1m49.967s, beating Rosberg’s 1m50.744s for Mercedes.

Then came Kobayashi in third place, his Ferrari-powered Sauber having been repaired during the break.

Lewis Hamilton lapped his McLaren in 1m51.438s to finish fourth ahead of his team-mate Jenson Button with a 1m51.518s.

Adrian Sutil also beat his Force India partner Paul di Resta, with 1m51.738s to 1m51.781s. Rubens Barrichello completed that bracket with 1m51.992s for Williams.

Sergio Perez made it a good session for Sauber by taking ninth fastest time in 1m52.169s, just ahead of Sebastien Buemi on 1m 52.189s for Toro Rosso and Vitaly Petrov on 1m52.198s for Renault.
