A week away from the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, Gene Haas, the owner of the new Haas Formula 1 Team, must now enter in deeper discussions with potential drivers for his organisation.
Last week Haas spoke to USA Today about his plans on the driver front. “The drivers we would probably be getting are drivers who have gone to another team and aren’t happy with that team’s progress. It’s a real chess game of figuring out who is going to wind up where. We’re just another alternative,” Gene Haas declared.
Due to the close links to Ferrari, Haas and team boss Gunter Steiner may well have to choose drivers who are already linked to the Scuderia. Esteban Gutierrez The Mexican would be a good fit for Haas. The former Sauber driver is currently Ferrari’s reserve driver and the commercial tie-ups with his Mexican sponsors seem to be working with Ferrari. Jean-Eric Vergne The Frenchman is also under contract with Ferrari. The former Toro Rosso driver competes in the FIA Formula E series this season and has solid F1 experience under his belt. Raffaele Marciello A member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, Marciello is currently Sauber’s reserve driver. He lacks F1 experience however. Alexander Rossi The American would also be a perfect fit for Haas. The GP2 driver has tested an F1 car a few times, having been the test driver for Caterham and Marussia. Kimi Raikkonen Kimi? Why not! If Ferrari does not keep his services for 2016, the Finn could find a new home at Haas, although we doubt he’d be fascinated in breaking in a brand new team…
