Mercedes AMG driver Nico Rosberg, the winner of the Spanish Grand Prix two days ago, put the hammer down Tuesday as he dominated the field in Day 1 of the first in-season test in Barcelona.
Rosberg put on an impressive performance, lapping the circuit in 1m24.372, 2.25 seconds quicker than anyone else. The German also completed 146 laps of the Spanish circuit, covering a distance of 680km. It should be pointed out that Rosberg, as well as Ferrari, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso were carrying out tire testing for Pirelli, which making meaningful comparisons difficult to make.
Marcus Ericsson was second fastest in the Ferrari-powered Sauber in 1m26.624. Italian Raffaelle Marciello finished the session third quickest for Ferrari after clocking up 125 laps. Daniel Kvyat was fourth for Red Bull Racing, ahead of Pastor Maldonado in the Lotus and rookie Nick Yelloly in the Force India. Another debutant, Frenchman Pierre Gasly seventh fastest in the Toro Rosso.
Williams had a quiet day with Felipe Massa only eighth quickest. McLaren was 9th and last with Oliver Turvey posting a best time of 1m28.542 late in the day and completing 68 laps in total.
