Sebastian Vettel extended his championship lead on Sunday by winning the Malaysian grand prix from the pole position.

"In the heat we stayed cool," said the reigning world champion and Red Bull driver, who is now 24 points ahead of McLaren's Jenson Button, who finished second on Sunday.

Vettel won despite being asked not to use the KERS, after teammate Mark Webber's unit failed. The team "didn't want to risk" more problems.

"We were just careful as we were racing McLaren and we could see from the laptimes that KERS was not necessary for Vettel. We were quick enough without it," explained team consultant Helmut Marko.

Lewis Hamilton faded in the last part of the race and was further slowed with a hit from behind by Fernando Alonso, but with Button within sight of the winner, McLaren is confident for the coming races.

"The step we've made from the last race to here is very impressive," said Button, his boss Martin Whitmarsh adding: "We will run a new floor in China on Friday."

"We went about the grand prix in a different way," said Red Bull's Christian Horner. "We focused more on the race and less on qualifying. China will be another challenge because it will be much cooler."
