Alfa Romeo to also Bring Rare Classic Models to Concours Event
Amidst all the hustle and bustle that accompanies the ramp-up to this
year's Frankfurt Motor Show, Alfa has surprised the motoring media industry by choosing to unveil a drop top version of its 8C Competizione concept car at this year's upcoming Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The reason why the car will be shown in California in a few weeks, rather than Germany in mid-September is because the Italian manufacturer was invited to be the featured marque at this year's event.
While it has long been speculated that Alfa Romeo would form a limited production run of the Competizione, these plans seem to have disappeared. The Maserati-sourced 400-horsepower 4.2-litre V8 powerplant plus bespoke chassis and beautiful lightweight bodywork would have helped
make the 8C one of the most desirable Alfa Romeo sports cars ever created, but Alfa's interests at the time were not in building a competitor to brand-mate Maserati, but improving its production lineup.
As it stands, the 8C Spider isn't a second chance at producing the Competizione; Alfa still has no intention putting it into production. Instead, the Spider was crafted to fulfill the event's regulations that a featured manufacturer must display a concept car. Alfa Romeo developed the Concours' centre piece from one of two existing 8C Competizione cars, skillfully removing the roof and adding a sleek tonneau cover. Though its details have yet to be announced, from the photos and what is known about how the car came to be, it's identical to the sporty coupe less the roof.
