Fisker Automotive just announced that the first deliveries of its new American premium hybrid sports car will begin in the last quarter of 2009, despite recent allegations made by Tesla Motors that Fisker stole precious design information.

Henrik Fisker, the former BMW designer, introduced the highly anticipated Karma at the North American International Auto Show, in January. The car features cutting-edge plug-in hybrid technology, penned as Q DRIVE and developed by Quantum Technologies exclusively for Fisker Automotive. In 2007, the two companies forged a strategic alliance to launch the world's first plug-in hybrid premium sports sedan.

The Fisker Karma sprints from 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds and reaches a top speed of over 125 mph. Similar to the Chevrolet Volt, it uses a small combustion engine to feed the lithium-ion batteries that power the electric drive system. In full electric mode, the car offers a range of about 45 miles.

Fisker has long been a household name in the automotive design universe. His resume includes the 1991 BMW E-1 electric car, the BMW Z8, the Aston Martin DB9 and V8 Vantage and, more recently, the 2005 Fisker Tramondo and Latigo CS.
