Despite getting a new $25 million offer for Fisker Automotive, the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) has finally decided to auction off the struggling electric car maker's loan on October 11th.

Fisker still owes about $171 million to the government.

“After exhausting any realistic possibility for a sale that might have protected our entire investment, the department announced today that we are auctioning the remainder of Fisker’s loan obligation, offering the best possible recovery for the taxpayer,” said Peter W. Davidson, executive director of the DoE’s loan program office.

The winner of the auction will in fact become the new owner of Fisker.

All bids must include a commitment and business plan that promotes domestic manufacturing capabilities and related engineering for advanced technology vehicles in the U.S.

German investors Fritz Nols AG, company founder Henrik Fisker (backed by Hong Kong buyers), and even former GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz have been identified as possible bidders.
