Rumours are it will get a 770-hp supercharged 5.2L V8

The next North American International Auto Show in Detroit will take place for the last time in January, as it’s moving to summertime starting in 2020. This year, though, Ford will be there to unveil the Shelby GT500 of its Mustang, which needlessly to say has been awaited impatiently by fans of the muscle car.

The first salvo fired by Ford in its war strategy to create as big a buzz as possible ahead of the launch is the release this week of a first image, which shows the massive cover of a compressor. Rumours are that the car will get a 5.2L V8 generating at least 720 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, with some speculating that that output could be more along the lines of 770 hp.

For the rest, we’ll have to wait for more details before confirming anything. There’s still no word, for example, regarding the transmission(s), distinct style elements or unique materials that might be used for the Shelby GT500.

We’ll know all of this and more on January 14 when the Mustang Shelby GT500 gets its big reveal at the Detroit show.

Stay tuned for our full coverage of the event!
