The arrival of spring was officially celebrated yesterday. Ford, Ford dealers from the greater Montreal area and Mustang enthusiast organised a drive through Montreal to display their pride and joy; their Mustangs.

The initial gathering and departure took place from the Bell Center in downtown Montreal. From there, the 60 ponies trotted on through streets such as Crescent, Ste-Catherine and St-Denis. The end of the ride & drive, essentially where the Mustangs were rounded up, was at the Orange Julep, near the Hippodrome.

Amongst the assembled cars was a huge contingency of Ford's latest iteration of the car which debuted in 2005. There was also a large number of Stang's from the 1999-2004 era; many of which were heavily modified. The real stars of the day were a beautiful pristine baby-blue 1967 Coupe with a 289cc mated to a 3-speed autobox. The other star was a red 1966 GT350 Fastback complete with white stripes.

Ford did not miss this opportunity to showcase a few of their latest creations including the Edge, Fusion and 2008 Escape. Perhaps of more importance was the presence of a Ford GT with all of its 550 supercharged ponies and two GT500s, one coupe and one convertible.

As Shelby and Ford have been mixing it up for over 40 years, it only made sense that a Cobra be present. The replica of Carroll's original masterpiece is actually owned by a Ford employee. He explained that all of the mechanicals, running gear and brakes are lifted directly from a 1993 Mustang. This means that there be a proper 302cc or 5.0L V8 under the narrow sleek hood. The car is built by Factory5.

The Mustang was originally launched in 1964, the brainchild of one Lee Iacocca. Since then, the Mustang has become synonymous with performance and panache. Over the years, the original Pony car has attracted thousands upon thousands of passionate car lovers.

Yesterday's event is proof that the Mustang is as popular as ever.
