B.C.-based Azure Dynamics, which has electrified Ford’s Transit Connect since 2010, has filed for bankruptcy in the U.S.
The company laid off about 120 people worldwide at four sites on Monday, including at its offices near Boston, in the U.K., and about 50 workers at its Oak Park, Michigan, offices.
Azure halted production of the Transit EV Monday; a spokesman said they were unsure yet whether they would restart of end production permanently. They are currently reorganizing under court protection.
Ford declined to comment whether it would seek a new producer to continue to build the Transit Connect EV.
Azure has produced about 500 Transit EVs, and last year won a four-year contract from the Government Services Administration for an estimated $112 million US that allows government agencies and other U.S. military to order the Transit EV. They said they have orders for more than 2,200 EVs. Johnson Controls Inc. is a partial owner in the company.
