At the conclusion of a thrilling and hard-fought race, Michel Bonnet and his son Olivier finished one-two in the Formula Tour 1600 race held at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as part of the NASCAR NAPA 200 weekend in Montreal.
Action raged from the word go in thgis 15-lap race. Rémy Audette, driving a Van Diemen RF01 started from pole position but immediately had his mirrors filled with the two Vectors of the Bonnets.
Didier Schranen, in a CMV et Jérimy Daniel, driving a Mygale were also part of the leading group. The top five drivers passed and repassed each others several times each lap.
On lap 8, Audette was forced to brake very hard at the end of the olympic basin straight and locked up the rear wheels, causing him to spin. Rémy lost seven places in the process but managed to get back into action.
Out in front, the battle was hard but fair. Very intense.
But during a passing manoeuvre, the CMV of Schraenen touched the wheel of the Vector of Olivier Bonnet.
But the CMV was not in great shape. Schraenen had a gearbox problem, and on the last lap, it jammed in first gear. Schraenen drove the last lap of the race at a very slow pace…
At the end of the 15th lap, the chequered saluted the win of Michel Bonnet, crosssing the line with an advantage of 1.16 second on his son Olivier and 2.78 seconds on Daniel.
Rémy Audette made a great comeback to finish 4th ahead of Marcel Lafontaine, Dean Baker, Charles Leclerc and Schraenen.
NOTE: Schraenen was a victim of a physical discomfort when he drove back into the pits. Schranen was taken to the Sacre-Cœur hospital. Dr Ronald Denis declared that his main heart artery was blocked at 99%. Schraenen underwent surgery and is now feeling fine.
