Honda and Toyota both plan to sell mass-produced fuel cell vehicles next year, according to reports found by Automotive News in Japan's Nikkei newspaper.

A zero-emissions fuel cell sedan is what Honda has in store for November 2015. Expect a range of nearly 500 kilometres, which is double the range of current electric cars save for the Tesla Model S. The latter can cover up to 480 kilometres on a full charge of its 85kWh battery.

Meanwhile, Toyota is focused on launching a fuel cell sedan in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. From about 1,000 units in 2015, production could rise to tens of thousands of units by 2020.

One of the biggest obstacles to mainstream appeal, of course, remains the price ― around 10 million yens in Japan, which equals to $108,000. However, Toyota hopes to cut that in half as production increases.
