With regard to performance, the car proves just as competitive as the conventionally-powered model. It uses a pair of electric motors – each rated at 145 kW – fed by a lithium-ion battery pack to produce a maximum power output of 290 kW and torque of 590 lb-ft. This compares with 338 kW for the standard Phantom with maximum torque of 531 lb-ft.

Pre-launch tests suggest the 102EX should provide a range of up to 200 kilometres, 0-100km/h accelerations in under 8 seconds and a top speed limited at 160 km/h.

If you're wealthy enough to consider buying such a luxurious and exclusive limousine, don't get too excited yet. Rolls-Royce has no plans to put the car into production.

Instead, the company will use feedback from customers, journalists, stakeholders and enthusiasts to evaluate the appropriateness of battery electric technology for its future models. A dedicated web site has been created and a world tour is scheduled.
