The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) is pressing Chancellor Angela Merkel to reject the proposed new law that would lower CO2 emission standards in Europe from 135 to 95 g/km by 2020, claiming it would greatly harm the industry.

German automakers have made considerable efforts so far to reduce vehicle emissions, but it appears the stricter future standards represent too big a hurdle.

“We cannot let our powerful and high-performing premium segment, which accounts for nearly 60% of all jobs at German car manufacturers, be destroyed by arbitrary limitations,” the VDA said in a statement.

On the other hand, French automakers support the new standards. Will the Americans and Japanese step into the ring?
