Five-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb tested a GP2 single seater Thursday at Jerez de la Frontera in southern Spain. The Frenchman eventually set the slowest time of the group of 25 drivers.
Loeb was 18th in the morning on a damp track, but slid down to 25th in the afternoon when the tarmac dried up.
British magazine Autosport reports on Friday that Loeb insists that the GP2 test was not a warm-up for a Formula 1 debut at next month's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final round of the 2009 F1 season.
On his official web site, Loeb indicated that the test had been masterminded by one of the track engineers of team Almeras for which he contested a few races of the Porsche Cup in France last year.
This engineer now works for DPR in GP2. Knowing that Loeb is keen on driving various types of race cars, he talk DPR into inviting Loeb to run in the Jerez test session.
Loeb told Autosport: “I'm just doing this because I have the chance. I would like to do the [F1] race, but nothing has changed - it's the same every day.”
