Chevrolet will soon introduce a production model based on the Beat subcompact car. The announcement was made on November 14 by the brand's general manager, Ed Peper, who spoke at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Similar in size to the Aveo, the Beat was one of the three concept cars unveiled by GM earlier this year at the New York Auto Show, along with the Trax and Groove. This one boasts a modern, tuning-inspired design.

In the meantime, consumers were invited to vote for their favorite model via a special website. "The response from Internet users to our triplets was outstanding. As it turned out, the Beat proved to be the most popular," said Mr. Peper. Over 1.8 million votes were cast.

The production model, set to hit the market in mid-2009, will first be available outside of North America. The Beat will retain the concept's compact size and make use of a fuel-efficient, small-displacement engine.

Like the Trax and Groove, the Beat had been primarily developed by the automaker's Korean design studio, in collaboration with GM Daewoo. Back then, it was based on a new subcompact car previously introduced by Suzuki, the Splash, and sold across Europe as the Opel/Vauxhall Agila.
